Trip 7
July 5 1999

DAY 1
Monday 28 June

Today is my first day aboard the ship. I arrived this morning by seaplane. Shortly after arriving I began to meet the crew. The surfers consist of several groms, Ryan, Corey, Jonathan, Michael, and the super grom Jeremy. Peyo and Murphy came along to keep the kids in line. Myself being 22 I feel sort of out of place somewhere in between the groms and the team managers.

My first surf today was with Peyo and Murphy. Although the surf was small and a bit inconsistent I had fun. Spent most of time aboard quietly watching the routines. Typically one hears Jeremy shouting "No, no, no" which is always followed by a splash as he is thrown overboard.

The seaplane spent half the day buzzing around the boat for film and photos. Shortly after I had a surf with the groms. I don't know what it is like where these kids come from but they are definitely not scared of reefs. Jonathan, the eldest , made so many backside barrels it was ridiculous. The others were ripping and I felt kind of stupid.

The swell is supposed to build for the next few days. All is going well. Martin, Paul and the photographers, Bernard and Jeff, are really cool; very nice and helpful. This trip looks to be insane. Well, tonight is a full moon so we will see what happens.

DAY 2
Tuesday 29th June

Today we left the lagoon where I arrived. We stopped and surfed a small left. We only surfed for half an hour as the reef was too shallow; the waves were too small and it just wasn't very fun. We are now headed toward another island. As far as you can see there is island after island. A never-ending sea, pockmarked with little dots of land just barely keeping their heads above water.

So far everyone has just been lounging around watching videos, reading, napping, or writing. We had a few fish bite on the lines but none worth keeping. I'm hoping we find waves soon. We stop at an island, see another great setup, but the wind is into it. After anchoring behind the island we take the tin boat over and check out the beach.

DAY 3
Wednesday 30th June

Terrible winds this morning. No surf so we head off to another island. Arrive at the island and there are some waves but very windy and rainy, so they decide to go back to the mainland. I think some people are leaving tomorrow.

Last night, after another great meal, it was time to teach Jeremy another lesson. The kid is not that bad but he is a little "cheeky" as Murph says. Out came the duct tape. After taping together his feet and hands pieces of chocolate were placed on the table. Jeremy would wriggle around and snatch them up like a shark. Everyone was laughing, even Jeremy had fun. He was a little upset though when the tape had to come off because it took quite a bit of hair with it.

Jeremy is behaving much better today, he is quiet and calm. Maybe he did learn. The weather and swell are not co-operating and we still have a few more days. No one is sure what we are going to do. Martin and Steve are doing an incredible job searching.

DAY 4
Thursday 1st July

Today we heard rumours of more swell and it seemed to show. First we had to drop off Michael and Steve. After that we headed out. Shortly after leaving the weather turned foul. Within an hour we were rocking over six foot seas, fighting a hefty wind. With the lack of surf, this was easily the best part of the trip. Luckily, I didn't get seasick. I had fun getting tossed around in the cabin.

Because of the wind and rain, visibility was very low. That left navigation to the charts, which was pretty interesting. We were heading towards reefs while fighting the swells. This lasted a few hours until we anchored. Although out of the swells it was still incredibly windy and cold.

After spaghetti we watched a good movie called "Killer Tongue" which I recommend. It was very funny. Imagine a girl talking to her three-foot long killer tongue. It was great. No surfing, no photos, but it sure beats sitting in Cal.

DAY 5
Friday 2nd July

The storm finally blew over. It is still quite windy. Today we have prospects of more swell from the storm. We set out for another island and stop at a new spot. It looks fun but windy. We settle there and go surfing. The waves are OK but too windy. Had there been swell and good weather it would be going off. After a few hours we head back to eat lunch.

After lunch the boredom sets in. Lots of reading and sleeping. The quest for some missing Kit Kats is still on. Jeremy is the prime suspect. Eventually we start playing Backgammon. This is fun as it passes time. At least the scenery is perfect.

Paul and Murph took little Tommy out for a surf at the left. I went along to surf by myself while they played on the inside. The whole time I was out I could hear them yelling and carrying on like kids. It was great, and the surf was OK. I hit the reef pretty good. Maybe the waves will be good tomorrow. Tonight we watched "US Marshals" and then I passed out as I was so tired.

DAY 6
Saturday 3rd July

Today we head back to the spot where I arrived. The crew named it "Chocolate Island" after a chocolate treasure hunt. We arrive here at about 11am. The wind is still blowing, but the waves look OK. Peyo, Jonathan and I paddle out. There seemed to be an elusive right on the outside. I came to the conclusion that the right was no good after catching some short ones and getting caught inside. After the wind died a little it got fun.

Eventually I paddled in 2 ½ hours later. Should be fun later when the tide comes back up. We finally caught some edible fish that made for a good lunch. Took a nap and listened to some Black Sabbath before surfing again. I paddled out with Martin and Murphy before dark. The waves were really fun. Had dinner and watched "8 Heads in a Duffel Bag". Very tired again tonight. Hopefully we will shoot in the morning.

DAY 7
Sunday 4th July

Woke up early to surf "Chocolate island". Surf was typical shoulder high, windy but fun. Tried to put on a tube-riding seminar and got stuffed a few times. After surfing, we headed back. Most of us are leaving tomorrow. It will be nice to get home.

On the way back to the main island we caught some fish and even threw Ryan overboard. Jeremy is acting much better these days. I think he learned from his "Code Red" experiences.

After a nice Mahi dinner it is a slow night. Captain is asleep by 8.30pm. Not sure what the plans are for tomorrow. Plane leaves at 9pm so I'll have the whole day to hang out. I'd say it was a good trip. The surf was fun but not epic. Hopefully we got a few shots. If not, then I know Hornbaker got some film. Whatever, I had fun and I think everyone else did too.

DAY 8
Monday 5th July

Today is the last day. We anchored in the harbour last night. Now we are all packed waiting to go to the airport. My flight does not live until 9pm so I still have quite a wait. It feels good to be going home. I just hope there are some decent waves when I get there. The trip was fun. The waves could have been better but the adventure was great.
