Barrett's new $100 vessel.

The Trader awoke to a new island surrounding after steaming all night from our pickup point. The motor was a calm one and well worth the new location with swell potential. As the sun rose we were dropping the anchor. At this Dave, Shane and Hans were up and frothing at what was around the corner. We jumped into the tinny and zoomed around a cay and into a coral pass that would let us look at the front side of the waves that were beginning to show. The crystal clear water, the many miniature islands, the shallow reef channels and a new swell appearing, things were getting interesting. The whole day was ahead of us. After scoping out a few spots that were breaking but not on a consistent basis the decision was made to bolt. After an hour we were on the main coastline and exploring.

We went on checking ten miles of coast line before we decided to surf a small but super clean right. Dave brought out his 12-0 to ride. Guy brought out a twin fish. Shane and Hans stuck to traditional thrusters. A nice ride could be ridden 100m.

As the Trader dropped the hook four boys who fish for their daily meal appeared.  Arsenio, Benito, Jose, and Clemente are brothers that come from a family of sixteen boys. They help out at home by fishing out on the ocean in their dug out canoes. These craft have a freeboard of four inches and require good balance to paddle and keep upright. The captain asked if the boys ever rode the wave that the surfers were on. They smiled and without saying a word started paddling towards the break.  Everyone in the line up was wondering about these kids and whether Guy and Mark were going to have to use their lifeguard skills. Little did they know that they could ride.

Dave was the first to get shown up. He took off on a wave and Jose dropped in on him. Everyone was cool though since this is not Hawaii and these kids never seen surfboards much less surfed with someone else. Smiles and hooting were abound. Guy and Shane had a go by borrowing canoes themselves and catching a few waves. Everyone was having a blast but you could tell that these kids were the kings of this new break.

After the four hour session everyone came back for lunch and this is when negotiations started. Barrett was really keen on the canoes and wanted to buy one. Clemente through an interpreter offered one. Clemente got Barrett to buy a canoe for $100 but little did he know that it was the new one that was being bought. The new canoe belongs to Clemente’s little brother Arsenio. And Arsenio was not selling. The little kid was not going to sell his boat for the world so Clemente ended up dropping the price and including a paddle. After giving the kids some octopus to take back to the home and a ride to the beach we waved good bye. The hook was taken up and the plan was to continue down the coast looking for surf. Some was found on a reef island that we ended up finding in the late afternoon light.

The wave was a fun A-frame that would be well suited to launch on. So the jetski was lowered and two of the best big wave tow-in surfers had a go… Dave and Guy. The show was impressive on the shoulder high sets. Shane, Mark, and Hans followed in long boards and caught the leftovers that the jetski crew were not taking. For a world champ bodysurfer Mark ripped it up. As the sunset the potential of this wave the decision to stay was made. Tomorrow we use this aquatic playground with a building swell.
